Welcome to Data Center Planning: Design Concepts & Business Models course. This is a comprehensive project based course where you will learn how to design basic data centers, analyze location, calculate electricity cost, simulate data center cooling systems, and evaluate data center financial and business models, This course is a perfect combination between technical data center design and business analysis, making it an ideal opportunity to practice your analytical skills while improving your technical knowledge in data center planning. In the introduction session, you will learn the basic fundamentals of data center, such as getting to know key data center infrastructures, understanding how data center works, and learning about different types of data center. Then, in the next section, we will learn about data center reliability, including N, N+1, 2N, and 2N+1 redundancy. We will also learn how to identify single points of failure and understand how different redundancy strategies can help to minimize the impact of component failures. Afterward, we are going to design a simple data center building facility using SketchUp where we will create basic building structure, server room, rack rows, hot and cold aisles, electrical room, and cooling area. This project will help us understand how different spaces and infrastructure are organized within a data center and how the physical layout supports efficient and reliable operations. After that, we are also going to design a data center rack and its infrastructure using Onshape. This project will help us understand how data center equipment is physically organized within a rack and how precise CAD modeling can be used for infrastructure design. Following that, we are also going to simulate basic data center network connectivity using Python and NetworkX, where we will connect servers, switches, and routers, visualize the network topology, and simulate component failures. The objective is to understand network connectivity, identify critical components, and evaluate basic network redundancy. Then, after that, we are going to analyze potential data center locations using OpenStreetMap and Google Earth Engine. Specifically, we will consider factors such as proximity to power infrastructure, customers, land availability, climate conditions, elevation, and environmental risks. In the next section, we are going to analyze data center power requirements, electricity consumption, and power efficiency using Google Sheets, where we will calculate IT load, power capacity, electricity consumption, operating costs, power utilization, and capacity headroom. Next, we are also going to build a basic data center cooling simulation using SimScale, where the objective is to analyze airflow and temperature distribution, identify potential hot spots, and evaluate the effectiveness of the cooling strategy. Then, in the next section, we are going to plan data center capacity. Initially, we will use Google Sheets to calculate rack, power, cooling, and space capacity, and then use Python and linear programming to optimize rack and workload allocation within these constraints. Lastly, at the end of the course, we are going to analyze a data center project from a business and financial perspective, including calculating capital expenditure, operating expenditure, and revenue projection. We will also compare different data center business models to understand how they generate revenue and how infrastructure decisions can affect profitability.
Firstly, before getting into the course, we need to ask this question to ourselves? Why should we learn about data centers? Well, here is my answer, as AI consumption continues to increase, demand for computing infrastructure and data centers continues to grow. In addition, data centers are becoming increasingly important to the digital economy, creating many job opportunities for IT and engineering professionals.
