Surface Mount Technology (SMT) drives modern electronics manufacturing. However, high-speed assembly and miniaturized components leave zero room for process drift. A single unoptimized reflow profile or misaligned stencil print can cascade into costly scrap, rework loops, and field failures.
This course delivers a complete, practical foundation in SMT manufacturing processes, visual and automated inspection standards, defect root-cause analysis, and corrective action implementation. Designed from real-world production engineering practices, it bridges the gap between theoretical electronics design and shop-floor manufacturing excellence.

What You Will Learn


-Core SMT Workflow: Understand the operation and critical parameters of solder paste printing, pick-and-place, reflow soldering, and post-assembly cleaning.
-Process Optimization: Control paste volume, aperture design, squeegee pressure, placement force, and reflow thermal profiling (Ramp-Soak-Spike-Cool).
-Defect Classification & Root-Cause: Identify defects like solder bridging, tombstoning, voiding, head-in-pillow (HiP), de-wetting, and component skew using visual, AOI, and AXI methods.
-Quality Standards: Navigate IPC-A-610 criteria across Class 1, 2, and 3 assemblies to evaluate acceptable, process indicator, and defect conditions.
-Problem-Solving & CAPA: Execute a structured 8D problem-solving cycle, apply 5 Whys and Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams, and implement verifiable Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to permanently eliminate recurring line defects.

Section 1: Foundations of SMT Manufacturing
- Overview of Surface Mount Technology vs. Through-Hole Technology (THT)
- Anatomy of an SMT line: Loader, Screen Printer, SPI, PnP, Reflow Oven, AOI, Unloader
- Solder paste fundamentals: Alloy types, flux chemistry (RMA, No-Clean, Water-Soluble), powder sizes, and shelf-life management
Section 2: The SMT Production Process & Critical Parameters
- Stencil printing: Aperture design, area ratio/aspect ratio, stencil cleaning cycles
- Solder Paste Inspection (SPI): Height, volume, area, and offset limits
- Pick-and-Place: Feeder setup, nozzle selection, vision alignment, and placement accuracy
- Reflow Soldering: Thermal profiling techniques, thermocouple attachment, Time Above Liquidus (TAL), peak temperature limits, and conveyor speed control
Section 3: Inspection, Quality Standards, and Defect Recognition
- Optical inspection principles: Manual Visual Inspection, 2D/3D AOI, and X-ray Inspection (AXI) for BGA/QFN packaging
