Automate Vault OSS and Enterprise in development mode labs with Taskfile, Raft, Consul, multi-node clusters, and monitor
What you'll learn
⚡ Build a repeatable local HashiCorp Vault development lab using Taskfile and shell commands.
⚡ Run Vault in development mode with in-memory, integrated Raft, and Consul storage backends.
⚡ Launch single-node, multi-node, and multi-cluster Vault environments for hands-on testing.
⚡ Monitor Vault with Prometheus and Grafana and explore Enterprise integrations with CockroachDB.
Requirements
❗ Basic familiarity with terminal commands is helpful, but no previous HashiCorp Vault experience is required. A macOS computer with internet access and permission to install software. A code editor or terminal editor for viewing and modifying Taskfile configuration.
Description
Learn how to build repeatable HashiCorp Vault development environments using Taskfile.
Instead of manually entering long commands every time you want to test Vault, you will create a reusable Taskfile that can download binaries, prepare the lab environment, start services, inspect running processes, collect logs, and cleanly stop everything.
Throughout the course, you will work with both Vault Open Source and Vault Enterprise while exploring several development configurations.
You will learn how to
✨ Validate the tools required by the lab
✨ and organize different Vault versions
✨ Start, inspect, and stop Vault through automated tasks
✨ Run Vault with in-memory, integrated Raft, and Consul storage
✨ Launch single-node and multi-node Vault Enterprise in legacy mode environments
✨ Experiment with multi-cluster Vault Enterprise (legacy) development environments
✨ Manage log files, environment variables, and connection details
✨ Start supporting services such as Consul and CockroachDB
✨ Monitor Vault using Prometheus and Grafana
✨ Structure Taskfile tasks so the lab remains readable, reusable, and easy to extend
This course is designed for developers, DevOps engineers, platform engineers, system administrators, SREs, and anyone who wants practical experience with HashiCorp Vault.
No previous Vault experience is required. Basic familiarity with a terminal is helpful because the course focuses on hands-on command-line labs.
By the end of the course, you will have a reusable Vault development lab that lets you quickly launch different Vault configurations for learning, demonstrations, application testing, and experimentation.
The environments created in this course use Vault development mode and are intended for education and testing. They are not production-ready deployments.
