The ServiceNow catalog automation I built for a client, rebuilt live: variables, qualifiers, approvals, Now Assist

What you'll learn

⚡ Build a ServiceNow Service Catalog item from scratch and choose the right variable type for every field on the form
⚡ Automate group membership with Flow Designer, including looping over multiple groups from a single request
⚡ Write advanced reference qualifiers and move them into a reusable Script Include that other catalog items can call
⚡ Add an approval step to your flow so group access is never granted before someone signs off
⚡ Handle both adding and removing group access from one catalog item using Catalog UI Policies and flow branching
⚡ Build, test and publish your own Now Assist skill using the Now Assist Skill Kit

Requirements

❗ A free ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance. I show you how to request one in the first section.
❗ Basic familiarity with the ServiceNow interface: lists, forms and the filter navigator.
❗ No scripting background needed. The jаvascript used is short and explained line by line.

Description

I built this automation for a client, and then recorded the training for their team. Group access requests were arriving by email, an admin was adding rows to the group membership table by hand, and there was no record of who had approved anything.
This course is that build, done on screen from an empty instance so you can follow every step. By the end you will have a working Service Catalog item that adds a user to groups, routes the request for approval before any access is granted, and removes groups from the same form. Nothing is pre-built and dropped in, and nothing is a toy example. This is the shape of a request the business actually asked for.
We start with the catalog item itself: choosing the right variable types, understanding what a Request and a Requested Item actually are, and writing the membership record from Flow Designer.
Then we tighten the form with advanced reference qualifiers, so the group picker only ever shows valid options. You will write the query inside a reusable Script Include and see exactly why a Simple qualifier cannot do the job.
Next we add the approval. Group membership can carry roles, and some of those roles consume licenses, so access should not be written until somebody signs off.
Then we handle removal, which is where most builds stop. One item, one flow, two paths, and three real bugs that I find and fix on camera rather than editing out.
The course closes with a bonus module on ServiceNow AI: building a custom skill with the Now Assist Skill Kit, from an empty definition through a subflow that feeds it context, to a published skill that writes back to the incident.
These are unscripted builds. I work through the mistakes live, because watching someone diagnose a duplicate entry error or a silent JSON parsing bug is worth more than watching a rehearsed take.
Every section ends with a written summary covering the reasoning the video moves past quickly, plus a quiz so you can check what stuck before moving on.
The client's name and data are not in here. The pattern is, and it transfers to almost any access request your organisation still runs by hand.

Who this course is for

⭐ ServiceNow administrators who configure through the UI and want to start automating
⭐ New ServiceNow developers who have finished the fundamentals and want a real build to follow
⭐ Service desk teams who own access requests and are tired of processing them by hand
⭐ Anyone preparing for the CSA or CAD exam who wants hands-on practice with catalog, flow and approvals
