Description


Static Timing Analysis (STA) is the gate that decides whether a chip actually works at speed — and most RTL and ASIC engineers never get formal training in it. This course closes that gap with a complete path from first principles to a real, hands-on signoff flow.
You will start with the fundamentals: what STA actually verifies, how it differs from dynamic simulation, startpoints and endpoints, timing paths, and the two concepts every other topic in this course builds on — setup time and hold time, arrival time, required time, and slack.
From there you move into how real signoff tools model delay: liberty libraries and PVT corners, NLDM versus CCS delay models, slew and derating, RC interconnect delay, and effective capacitance. You will learn to read and write SDC constraints from scratch: master and generated clocks, clock uncertainty, jitter and latency, multiple clock domains and clock groups, input and output delay, and the full set of timing exceptions — false paths, multicycle paths, and asynchronous recovery/removal checks.
The advanced modules cover the topics that separate a working engineer from a signoff expert: clock gating checks, half-cycle paths, signal integrity and crosstalk, on-chip variation and derating, common path pessimism removal, multi-scenario (MMMC) signoff, statistical STA, and the practical difference between GBA and PBA analysis engines, including voltage-aware timing.
A dedicated module compares STA against every other form of timing verification — RTL simulation, zero-delay gate-level simulation, and SDF-annotated gate-level simulation — so you understand exactly what each method catches and misses, and why STA exists at all.
The course closes with a full hands-on lab using OpenSTA, the open-source signoff-grade timing engine, on a real Sky130 design: environment setup, loading the design and parasitics, running the analysis, advanced reporting, practical debugging with a real ECO loop, power and tape-out signoff checks, and scan chain timing in practice.
By the end, you will be able to read and build professional STA reports, write and debug real SDC constraints, understand every major signoff-level topic, and run a real static timing analysis flow from an OpenSTA prompt — not just recognize the terms.
