Infection prevention and control for healthcare workers: chain of infection, hand hygiene, PPE, HAIs and outbreaks
What you'll learn
Describe the 6 links of the chain of infection and identify exactly where to break it to stop transmission
Apply WHO's 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene and standard precautions correctly in every patient encounter
Select the right PPE for contact, droplet and airborne pathogens, and don and doff it in the correct sequence
Choose the correct decontamination level for any clinical item using the Spaulding classification
Calculate and interpret HAI surveillance rates for CAUTI, CLABSI, SSI and VAP using device-day denominators
Lead a structured outbreak response — case definitions, line lists, control measures and communication
Requirements
No prior infection control knowledge is needed. Every technical term is explained in plain English the first time it appears.
No software, equipment or purchases required — just a device to watch on.
Helpful but not essential: any experience of working in or visiting a clinical setting.
Description
"This course contains the use of artificial intelligence"More than 70% of healthcare-associated infections are preventable. This course teaches you how to prevent them.
One in ten hospitalised patients in high-income countries acquires an infection they did not arrive with. In low- and middle-income countries it is closer to one in seven. Behind almost every one of those infections is a gap in practice that somebody could have closed.
This course gives you the complete foundations of infection prevention and control (IPC), built from the ground up. No prior knowledge is assumed, and every technical term is explained in plain English the first time it appears.
What you'll learn
Across six modules you will work through the chain of infection and learn where to break it; standard precautions including the WHO 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene and correct PPE selection, donning and doffing; transmission-based precautions for contact, droplet and airborne pathogens; decontamination and sterilisation using the Spaulding classification; the four major healthcare-associated infections — CAUTI, CLABSI, SSI and VAP — and the prevention bundles that stop them; and how to recognise and lead a structured outbreak response.
You will also learn to calculate and interpret HAI surveillance rates, including device-day rates and the standardised infection ratio. We work through the arithmetic together, step by step.
Learn from real cases, not just rules
Every module includes a clinical vignette set in a teaching hospital. You will trace an MRSA cluster on a surgical ward back to an asymptomatic colonised nurse. You will follow how one missed hand hygiene moment became three cases of C. difficile. You will see how an unrecognised tuberculosis admission exposed sixteen people in four days, how biofilm in an endoscope channel caused a Pseudomonas outbreak, and how an ICU halved its CAUTI rate in a single quarter with no new equipment.
Infection control can feel like a long list of rules to memorise. Seen through real cases, the rules stop being rules and start making sense.
Who this course is for
Nurses, physicians, laboratory staff, environmental services and cleaning teams, medical and nursing students, and practitioners new to an IPC role. It is equally suited to anyone preparing for infection control certification who wants the fundamentals secure first.
