Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Payment Fundamentals: From Instruction to Final Settlement is built around the instructor's decades of practical banking experience, with AI tools used to support course development and presentation.
A customer presses Send. What happens next?
Payment Fundamentals: From Instruction to Final Settlement follows one practical cross-border payment from beginning to end. Emma in Dublin, Ireland sends EUR 5,000 to Daniel in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, who holds a USD account. That simple customer request becomes the anchor for understanding the complete banking journey underneath it.
Across 14 learning sets and 70 focused lectures, you will follow the payment through customer initiation, authentication, validation, sanctions and fraud controls, routing, payment messaging, correspondent banking, foreign exchange, clearing, settlement, beneficiary processing, exceptions, investigations and reconciliation.
The course is designed to make payments operationally understandable rather than merely theoretical. Instead of treating terms such as Debtor Agent, Creditor Agent, Nostro, UETR, pacs.008, cover payment or reconciliation as isolated definitions, we repeatedly place them into the same end-to-end payment story.
You will learn why there is no single universal route for a cross-border payment. Depending on banking relationships, currency, clearing access, liquidity, correspondent arrangements and internal routing rules, the same customer requirement may follow different valid chains.
You will also learn an important discipline that runs through the entire course: message movement is not the same as money movement. A payment instruction may have been sent while settlement is still pending. A customer account may have been debited while the beneficiary has not yet been credited. A payment may have reached the receiving bank but still require FX, validation or reconciliation.
The course introduces both traditional and modern payment language. You will connect MT payment concepts with ISO 20022 messages such as pacs.008 and pacs.009, and understand the practical purpose of BICs, UETR, SWIFT gpi, RMA and RMA Plus without turning the course into a field-by-field technical manual.
Foreign exchange is explored as part of the payment chain rather than as a separate treasury lesson. You will compare scenarios where the Debtor Agent converts EUR to USD, where the Creditor Agent converts at destination, and where another bank in the chain may perform FX. You will learn to ask three practical questions: What amount was instructed? What amount was settled? What amount was finally credited?
You will then examine clearing and settlement, correspondent accounts, serial and cover payments, payment receipt and beneficiary credit, reject/repair/return scenarios, investigations, Nostro reconciliation and unreconciled transactions.
The final learning sets bring the entire journey together and introduce developments such as instant payments, richer ISO 20022 data, APIs and emerging settlement models—while keeping the core banking disciplines of authority, control, settlement finality and reconciliation firmly in view.
This course is intended to give you a working mental map of payments. By the end, you should be able to hear a payments conversation at work and ask the right questions: Who are the parties? Which bank has the instruction? What route is being used? What currency is moving? What message was sent? Has settlement actually occurred? Has the beneficiary been credited? Has the transaction reconciled?
The course includes downloadable learner resources, knowledge checks and a final assessment to reinforce the concepts.
It is suitable for learners who want a practical foundation in payments without needing prior expertise in SWIFT message fields, XML, programming or complex payment-system configuration.
