•Over the past two decade the explosion of interest and participation in health promotion and wellness activities has resulted in an evolution in health care .
•In fact, health promotion is often confused with or used synonymously with health education.
•The confusion is the result of a change in the way thinking about or paradigm shift in the concept of health.
In 1986 the WHO sponsored the first international conference on health promotion ( Ottawa charter). Health promotion , as presented in the Ottawa charter, included
•Enabling people to live health lifestyles by building healthy public policy ,
• Creating supportive environment,
• Strengthening community action,
•Developing personal skills, and
• Reorienting health services.
•Health promotion is a relatively recent term that has various meanings among individual, and societies reflective of values, beliefs, politics, and philosophies.
•Health education is a major component of health promotion.
Theory helps to explain a phenomenon of interest.
Models are visual representations of the concepts that work together to become a theory.
Researchers developed theories that seek to explain factors and interactions among factors that influence the health of individuals or a group of individuals
