Nassim Taleb's book, taught concept by concept: rare events, cognitive bias, and acting without a forecast

What you'll learn

⚡ Define a Black Swan by its three marks, and explain why it is relative to the observer: a surprise for the turkey is a plan for the butcher.
⚡ Sort any domain into Mediocristan or Extremistan by asking one question: can a single observation move the total disproportionately?
⚡ Recognize the turkey problem in a long, calm track record, and check which kind of randomness produced it before you trust it.
⚡ Tell "no evidence of Black Swans" apart from "evidence of no Black Swans", and know where confusing the two gets expensive.
⚡ Catch the narrative fallacy, memory's rewrites and the pull of anecdotes, and counter them with deliberate habits like a diary and a written base rate.
⚡ Ask who never made it into the sample before you trust a track record, a success story or a dataset.
⚡ Judge when a game, an exam or a clean model is a fair stand-in for a real decision, and where it stops fitting.
⚡ Calibrate your own forecasts with honest ranges, and trust experts by whether their field is learnable, not by their credentials.
⚡ Read a plan's range before its average, because the surprises in projects push cost and time in one direction.
⚡ Explain Taleb's barbell, a truly safe majority plus a small speculative part and nothing in the middle, and why it fails if the safe leg is not safe.
⚡ Explain where the bell curve is legitimate, and why fractal models turn some Black Swans gray but never all of them.
⚡ Find the fourth quadrant in your own decisions, and change the exposure instead of modeling the risk harder.

Requirements

❗ No prior knowledge of Taleb's work is needed. Every technical term is explained in plain language.
❗ You do not need to have read The Black Swan. This course teaches each idea's definition, how it works, and where it stops applying.
❗ No math beyond arithmetic. The bell curve and power laws are taught with heights, wealth tables and a cup of coffee, not formulas.
❗ Bring one real decision, plan or track record you rely on. Most lectures are more useful with a specific case in hand.

Description

Most thinking about risk starts with a forecast. This course starts with the events that forecasts cannot see coming.
Nassim Taleb called them Black Swans: rare, high in impact, and explained away after the fact. His argument is that in money, careers and history a single event of that kind can outweigh everything that came before it, and that the human mind is built to miss them. You cannot forecast them. You can learn where they live, why you do not see them, and how to arrange your exposure so the damage a bad one can do has a limit.
Across 34 lectures in 12 modules you work through the book's core ideas one at a time. What a Black Swan is, and why it depends on who is watching. Mediocristan and Extremistan, the two kinds of randomness. The turkey problem and the round-trip fallacy. The narrative fallacy, memory and the pull of anecdotes. Silent evidence and survivorship bias. The ludic fallacy. The expert problem, and why plans miss in one direction. Where the bell curve works and where it fails, and what fractal randomness can and cannot tell you. Then what to do about it: preparation over prediction, the barbell, redundancy over debt, and the fourth quadrant.
Every concept gets three things: what it means, how it works, and where it stops applying. That third part is what keeps an idea from being used in the wrong place, and the course keeps Taleb's own qualifiers intact. Almost all social matters are from Extremistan, not all of them. Narrative is more accurate for Mediocristan; in Extremistan the story form itself misleads. Removing speculative debt removes roughly 90 percent of Black Swan risk in economic life, not in all of life.
This is for readers of Taleb who want the book taught rather than summarized, and for anyone whose work or money is exposed to rare events: investors, founders, managers, and people who make plans for a living. Nothing here is investment advice. The barbell and the debt lever are taught as Taleb's decision structures, in his own figures.
No prior reading is required, and no math beyond arithmetic. You get just over two hours of animated explainers, a quiz for each of the 12 modules, and a downloadable reference guide.
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence. The narration is my own recorded voice, the visuals are programmatically rendered from code, with licensed photographs and stock footage; none of the imagery is AI-generated. The scripts were written with AI assistance from my own reading notes.
