Select the right plate type, size from duty and pressure drop, and manage fouling — gasketted, welded, brazed and PCHE

What you'll learn

Select between gasketted, semi-welded, welded, brazed and printed circuit construction for a given service
Size a plate exchanger from duty and available pressure drop to determine plate count
Select chevron angle and plate geometry to balance heat transfer against pressure drop
Specify gaskets and plate materials for fluid compatibility, temperature and pressure
Judge whether a duty is suitable for a plate exchanger before committing to the selection
Recognise the services that will foul and plan the cleaning regime accordingly
Open a plate pack, inspect the plates and reassemble to the correct tightening dimension
Locate a failed plate using the vent path and pressure testing
Diagnose lost duty by distinguishing fouling, maldistribution, bypassing and plate damage
Compare plate against shell and tube on capital and lifecycle cost for a specific duty

Requirements

No prior plate exchanger experience is required — construction and principles are built from first principles
Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
Comfortable with basic algebra — the sizing method is worked step by step
No software or licence needed
Helpful but not essential: familiarity with shell and tube exchangers

Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
A plate exchanger gets ten times the surface area of a shell and tube in the same space. It also blocks in a fortnight on the wrong service.
The advantage and the vulnerability come from the same thing — narrow channels. Understanding that trade-off is most of what there is to know.
In this course you will learn how to select, size and maintain one.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN TO DO
By the end of this course you will be able to
● Select between gasketted, semi-welded, fully welded, brazed and printed circuit construction
● Size a plate exchanger from duty and available pressure drop, and balance the two
● Choose plate geometry and chevron angle to trade heat transfer against pressure drop
● Select gaskets and plate materials for the fluid, temperature and pressure
● Judge whether a duty is suitable for a plate exchanger at all before specifying one
● Plan cleaning and manage fouling in narrow channels
● Open, inspect and reassemble a plate pack to the correct tightening dimension
● Diagnose lost duty and distinguish fouling from maldistribution from plate damage
HOW THE COURSE IS TAUGHT
● Sizing worked by hand so you can see the trade-off between area and pressure drop
● No software or licence needed — the method transfers to any vendor's selection tool
● Honest about where plate exchangers must not be used, which is where most of the failures come from
● Five section quizzes and a final exam
● Every presentation is included as a downloadable PDF, so you keep the slides as a desk reference after the course
● Includes the opening, inspection and reassembly sequence that maintenance actually follows
WHAT IS COVERED
● Why compact exchangers exist — surface area density and approach temperature capability
● Gasketted plate exchangers, the frame, the plate pack and the double-seal leak path
● Welded, semi-welded and brazed construction, and what each buys and costs
● Printed circuit exchangers for extreme pressure and cryogenic service
● Plate geometry, chevron angle and the hard and soft plate distinction
● Heat transfer at low Reynolds number and true countercurrent flow
● Pressure drop, port velocity and flow maldistribution across the pack
● Sizing and pass arrangement, with a worked example
● Frame construction, tightening dimension and the mechanical pressure limit
● Gasket selection, compression set and the failures that dominate maintenance
● Plate materials, chloride stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion
● Fouling in narrow channels, cleaning methods and the danger of oversizing
● Opening, plate inspection, gasket replacement and reassembly
● Where compact beats shell and tube, and where it must not be used
WHO THIS IS FOR
● Process and mechanical engineers selecting and sizing heat exchangers
● Maintenance engineers opening, cleaning and reassembling plate packs
● Utilities and cooling water engineers responsible for plate exchanger performance
● Project engineers reviewing vendor plate exchanger proposals
● Engineers working on heat recovery or pinch projects where close approach matters
ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
I am a Chartered Engineer (CEng MIMechE) with over fifteen years in oil and gas, energy and industrial infrastructure, across a range of projects and disciplines.
For more than five years I have also been teaching. Close to twenty thousand engineers have taken my courses, which hold an average rating of 4.26 across the catalogue.
I build these courses because I am genuinely interested in how engineering works and why it fails, and because most technical subjects are taught far worse than they need to be. My aim every time is to produce the course I would have wanted when I first met the subject — practical, honest about what actually matters, and free of the padding that wastes your time.
