Description
Something is corroding. Three questions decide what happens next. Why is it degrading, how fast, and what stops it.
Most engineers can answer one of those. The inspector can name the mechanism but not the material behaviour underneath it. The materials engineer can specify the alloy but not design the cathodic protection. The corrosion engineer knows the monitoring data but not whether the material in the line is the material on the drawing.
This masterclass covers all three, because on an operating plant they are one problem.
WHY THESE MODULES BELONG TOGETHER
Corrosion under insulation is a design decision, a coating specification and an inspection problem at once. Sour service cracking is a materials selection, a hardness control and a fabrication issue simultaneously. A cathodic protection system that is not surveyed is a document rather than a protection measure.
Studied separately these subjects stay separate, and the engineer who owns one of them cannot close out a degradation problem alone. Studied together, the connections become the point.
WHAT IS INSIDE — SEVEN COMPLETE MODULESMaterials, Metallurgy & Corrosion.Microstructure, grain size and the iron-carbon system; heat treatment and what it actually achieves; the alloy families from carbon steel through stainless and duplex to nickel alloys; corrosion electrochemistry; localised corrosion; environmentally assisted cracking; high-temperature mechanisms; and material selection as a documented decision rather than a preference.
API 571 Damage Mechanisms. The mechanism catalogue every inspection code assumes you already know: thinning mechanisms from sulfidation to corrosion under insulation, environment-assisted cracking including chloride and amine stress corrosion cracking, high-temperature mechanisms including creep and high-temperature hydrogen attack, and the metallurgical and mechanical mechanisms that complete the picture.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Sour Service.H2S partial pressure and the severity thresholds, sulfide stress cracking as hydrogen embrittlement, HIC and the role of inclusions, SOHIC and soft zone cracking, chemistry restrictions and calcium treatment, HIC-resistant steel specification and test acceptance, hardness control in the weld and heat affected zone, and corrosion-resistant alloy environmental limits.
API 583 Corrosion Under Insulation.The mechanism and where it hides, the temperature ranges and geometries that make equipment susceptible, insulation and cladding design that prevents water ingress, coating selection under insulation, the detection problem and the inspection methods that work through cladding, and a programme that prioritises the equipment worth stripping.
Corrosion Management & Control Documents. Corrosion circuits and how to define them, the corrosion control document as the working record of what is expected to degrade and why, monitoring technique selection and location, chemical treatment and inhibition, corrosion rate determination from real data, and the assurance that keeps a programme alive after the consultant leaves.
API 578 Material Verification & PMI. Why material mix-ups happen and what they cost, XRF and its real limits including carbon detection, optical emission spectroscopy, risk-based programme extent, traceability and marking, nonconformance management, and the components most often left out of a verification programme.
Tank Cathodic Protection, Linings & Overfill. Soil-side and product-side corrosion of tank bottoms, cathodic protection design for sacrificial and impressed current systems, survey and acceptance criteria, internal lining selection and application, and overfill prevention and release prevention as the containment layer around all of it.

The corrosion control document. It appears in three modules and it is the thread connecting all of them. A corrosion circuit definition is a materials decision, a monitoring plan and an inspection scope simultaneously. Most plants have the document and cannot say when it was last true. The programme treats it as the working record it is supposed to be.
