Description

IMDG Code provides a practical, structured introduction to the controls used for packaged hazardous cargo in ocean transport. Accurate dangerous goods preparation protects people, vessels, cargo, and the marine environment while helping transport-chain partners submit clear, usable shipment information. This course explains how the IMDG Code fits into maritime safety operations and how responsibilities are shared by shippers, freight forwarders, packers, container operators, and carriers.
You will build a method for identifying a substance or article using the proper shipping name, UN number, class or division, subsidiary risk, packing group, and relevant special provisions. From there, you will interpret Dangerous Goods List entries, packaging instructions, UN specification packaging marks, package labels, overpack controls, placards, and dangerous goods transport documents. The course also covers the principles behind stowage and segregation decisions, including compatibility, foodstuffs, and freight container considerations.
The learning path moves from the Code framework and classification through packing, documentation, shipboard compatibility, operational acceptance, and container packing control. You will then examine limited quantities, marine pollutants, lithium batteries, and other higher-complexity shipments, along with escalation points that require carrier, competent-authority, or specialist review. Practical checklists and scenario-based thinking help you translate regulatory data into pre-shipment actions without treating the course as a substitute for current Code consultation or product-specific approvals.
✨ Read key IMDG transport descriptions and identify required shipment data.
✨ Check packaging, marking, labeling, documentation, and container-packing controls.
✨ Apply basic stowage and segregation logic to recognize incompatible cargo plans.
✨ Build an auditable acceptance process and escalate exceptions appropriately.
By the end of the course, you will be better prepared to contribute to safer, more consistent dangerous goods workflows, communicate effectively with transport partners, and know where to verify requirements before cargo is offered for sea carriage.
