This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
▸ A vessel that meets every design code can still be non-compliant the day it arrives.
Sour service is not a design problem in the usual sense. The thickness calculation is fine, the code stamp is fine, the pressure test passes. What fails is the metallurgy — hardness in a weld heat-affected zone, a plate that was never HIC tested, a bolt that nobody thought about, a valve trim that was substituted at the vendor.
And it fails late. Sour service non-compliance is typically found at documentation review, at site, or after a crack appears — long after the equipment was paid for.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 is the standard that governs it, and it is one of the most frequently referenced and least understood documents in oil and gas. Being written into a specification is not the same as being understood by the people applying it.

This course is built around the decisions you actually have to make and defend: is this service sour, which part of the standard applies, what does it require of the material, what does it require of the welding, and what documentation demonstrates that you complied.
The refinery side is covered properly too. NACE MR0103 / ISO 17945 applies where MR0175 does not, the boundary between them is a recurring source of specification error, and most available training ignores it entirely.

The most common failure in this subject is not a wrong material. It is a correct material with the wrong documentation, discovered too late to do anything cheap about it.
