Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
▸ Nobody teaches you to read a P&ID. You are simply expected to already know.
It is the single document every discipline on a plant works from — process, mechanical, instrument, operations, maintenance, safety, projects — and it is the one document almost nobody was formally taught to read. People learn it by osmosis, over years, guessing at symbols and asking someone next to them what a dashed line means.
The cost of that shows up in specific places. In a HAZOP, where a node is worked without anyone noticing the drawing shows two isolation valves and no double block and bleed. In a modification, where a line is tied into the wrong piping class because nobody read the class break. In an operations review, where the interlock everyone assumed exists turns out to be an alarm.
This course teaches the drawing as a language — the symbols, the identification system behind them, the conventions that vary between companies, and how to trace a system through a drawing set and answer a real question with it.
▸ A working skill, not a symbol gallery
Most P&ID material available online is a list of symbols with captions. That teaches recognition, not reading. Recognising a symbol is worth very little on its own — the skill is knowing what the drawing is telling you, what it deliberately does not show, and which question belongs on a different drawing entirely.
Five focused sections, worked through in an afternoon. The drawing family and where the P&ID sits within it; the symbol and tagging systems; the safety, relief and utility content; how to read the drawing for four different purposes; and how P&IDs are developed, revised and kept current on a real plant.
