Description


API 510, 570 and 653 tell you what must be inspected and how often. They do not tell you how to actually do it.
That is what API 572, 574 and 576 are for — the recommended practices covering vessel inspection, piping inspection, and pressure-relieving device inspection. They are source documents for the API certification examinations and, more usefully, they are the closest thing the industry has to a written account of how competent inspection is performed.
This course covers all three.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover inspection foundations and safety, vessel inspection practice, piping inspection practice, relief device inspection, and records, evaluation and close-out.
You will learn inspection planning from equipment history and predicted damage mechanisms, the safety regime that governs the work — confined space entry, isolation, gas testing, pyrophoric and toxic hazards — and the tools and data quality practices that everything downstream depends on.
VESSEL INSPECTION (API 572)
Vessel types and where damage concentrates. External inspection of insulation, coating, supports, saddles and skirts. Systematic internal survey once entry is made, including welds, heads, nozzles, internals, trays and linings. Thickness measurement location selection and grid design, and the specialised techniques needed on clad and lined vessels.
PIPING INSPECTION (API 574)
The highest-value section for most inspectors. Injection and mix points, dead legs and stagnant branches, soil-to-air interfaces, elbows and areas of turbulence. Condition monitoring location selection and density by circuit consequence. Scanning versus spot readings, measurement repeatability, short and long term corrosion rate calculation, and the statistical treatment of thickness data. Plus valves, flanges, small-bore connections, and buried and insulated piping including guided wave screening.
RELIEF DEVICE INSPECTION (API 576)
The subject with the least available training anywhere. Device types and failure modes, why relief valves fail on test, inlet and outlet fouling, set point drift, leakage and simmer, back pressure effects, and damage from previous discharge. Then shop practice: as-found set pressure verification, disassembly and component inspection, seat lapping, reassembly, post-repair testing, and setting test intervals from historical as-found data rather than habit.
TURNING FINDINGS INTO DECISIONS
The final section covers what happens after the inspection: reporting findings objectively, calculating corrosion rates and remaining life, recognising accelerating corrosion, escalating to fitness-for-service, deciding between repair, replacement and continued operation, and feeding the data back so the next inspection is better targeted than this one.
