Select and size exchangers, separators, columns, vessels, pumps and compressors — with margins, datasheets and cost
What you'll learn
Convert a process duty into an equipment selection you can defend at gate review, with the discriminating criteria stated
Size heat exchangers, separators, columns, vessels and storage to a first-pass level with the assumptions made explicit
Set a margin philosophy at project level and stop conservative assumptions compounding through the design
Select the right heat exchanger type — shell and tube, air-cooled, plate, spiral or printed circuit — and know where each must not be used
Select the separation method by phase, particle size and sharpness, and combine methods into a separation train
Size separators and knockout drums using settling velocity, residence time and internals selection
Select pumps, compressors and drivers at concept stage, including sparing philosophy and its capital cost
Build and maintain an equipment list and develop datasheets through the project stages
Engage vendors effectively, interpret a budget price, and know the difference between budget and firm pricing
Estimate equipment cost using capacity scaling, material factors and installed cost factors, and benchmark the result
Requirements
No prior equipment design experience is required — every selection is built from the duty upward
Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
Comfortable with basic algebra — every calculation is worked step by step
Helpful but not essential: some familiarity with process flow diagrams or equipment datasheets
No software or purchases needed — this is an applied engineering course
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
A process duty arrives on your desk. By the end of the week it has to be a piece of equipment, with a size, a type, a material and a budget price. Nobody teaches that step. It is learned by watching whoever did it last time.
That is a problem, because the equipment decision is made early, on the least information, and it is the decision that is most expensive to reverse. By the time it is obviously wrong, the plot plan, the piping and the structure have all been built around it.
This course teaches the selection and sizing step directly, across the full equipment population of a process unit.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover selection fundamentals and margin philosophy, heat transfer equipment, separation equipment, vessels, storage and machinery, and the deliverables — equipment lists, datasheets, vendor engagement and cost.
You will work through the selection logic for each equipment family: which options exist, what discriminates between them, and where each option must not be used. You will size to a first-pass level with the assumptions stated openly, so you know how much of the answer is engineering and how much is margin.
THE MARGIN PROBLEM
Process margin on the duty. Equipment margin on top of that. Vendor margin on top of that. Each layer is defensible on its own and together they buy a machine that never operates near its design point and costs more to run for its entire life. This course treats margin as a decision to be made and agreed at project level, not a habit.
FROM SELECTION TO DELIVERABLE
A full section covers what actually leaves your desk. Building and maintaining the equipment list. Datasheet development through the project stages and the split between process and mechanical content. What a vendor genuinely needs in order to quote something meaningful, and how to read a budget price. Package equipment, battery limit definition and the interface risk that comes with buying a skid instead of specifying components. And equipment cost estimation — scaling by capacity, material factors and installed cost factors.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Process engineers converting duties into equipment specifications; project and FEED engineers making early equipment decisions; mechanical and equipment engineers who receive those decisions and have to live with them; cost engineers and estimators pricing equipment scope; and graduate engineers on their first equipment package.
WHAT YOU GET
Structured on-demand video across 20 focused lessons and five sections, a final exam, downloadable lectures, lifetime access on mobile and TV and a certificate of completion.
No prior equipment design experience is required — every selection is built from the duty upward. Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow it.
Enrol now and stop copying the equipment decision from the last project.
