Tray hydraulics, packing and liquid distribution, column internals and how to diagnose a column that will not perform
What you'll learn
Read a column's hydraulic operating window and identify weeping, entrainment, jet flooding and downcomer backup from operating data
Diagnose a column that will not make specification, separating process causes from mechanical causes
Lay out a tray correctly — active area, downcomer area, weir height, clearance and seal — and know what each dimension controls
Select between random packing, structured packing and trays on capacity, efficiency, pressure drop, turndown and fouling
Specify liquid distributors and understand why distribution governs packed column performance more than the packing itself
Interpret differential pressure trends, temperature profiles and gamma scan results as diagnostic evidence
Design feed inlets and flash zones that do not destroy the separation you paid for
Understand column mechanical design — shell, skirt, wind and seismic loading, vibration and nozzle loads
Identify the damage mechanisms specific to column service, including overhead ammonium chloride corrosion and feed inlet erosion
Build a turnaround internals scope from performance data and inspect a column internally with a systematic method
Requirements
No prior distillation experience is required — separation principles are built up from the start
Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
Comfortable with basic algebra — every relationship is explained before it is used
Helpful but not essential: some familiarity with reading a process flow diagram
No software or purchases needed — this is an applied equipment course
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
A column is the most expensive thing on the unit and the one piece of equipment that can quietly cost a plant money every hour it runs. It does not fail loudly. It just stops making specification, and the loss appears in the product tank rather than on an alarm screen.
Almost every engineer who works on columns learns them from the outside — a datasheet, a simulation output, a vendor drawing. What is missing is the part that decides whether the column works: the internals. Trays and packing are where the separation actually happens, and where it stops happening.
This course covers the internals properly, and then covers what to do when they are not performing.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover column fundamentals and types, trays and hydraulics, packing and distribution, feed systems and mechanical design, and inspection through to troubleshooting.
You will read a column's hydraulic operating window and know exactly where weeping ends and flooding begins. You will lay out a tray — active area, downcomer, weir height, clearance and seal — and understand why each dimension is what it is. You will select between random and structured packing on capacity, efficiency, pressure drop and fouling rather than on habit, and you will understand why the liquid distributor above the bed matters more than the packing inside it.
THE DIAGNOSTIC SECTION
A full section is dedicated to the column that will not perform. Separating process problems from mechanical problems. Differential pressure trending and temperature profile interpretation. What a gamma scan actually shows you and what it does not. The internal survey — tray levelness, fouling, packing channelling, distributor condition — and what to photograph before anything is removed. And the point at which the honest answer is a revamp rather than a repair.
THE MECHANICAL AND MATERIALS SIDE
Shell thickness and the interface with the pressure vessel code. Skirt and base ring design, wind and seismic loading on slender vessels, vortex shedding and deflection limits. Materials selection by service, overhead corrosion including ammonium chloride, erosion at feed inlets, and the damage mechanisms specific to column internals.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Process engineers who own column performance; equipment and mechanical engineers specifying or replacing internals; reliability and integrity engineers investigating recurring problems; turnaround engineers building internals scope; and operations engineers who need to know what the differential pressure trend is telling them.
WHAT YOU GET
Structured on-demand video across 20 focused lessons and five sections, a final exam, downloadable lectures, lifetime access on mobile and TV and a certificate of completion.
No prior distillation experience is required — the separation principles are built up from the start. Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow it.
Enrol now and stop treating the column as a black box with a specification on the outside.
