API 610, 682 and 617 in one course — pump hydraulics and NPSH, every seal plan, compressor surge and dry gas seals

What you'll learn

⚡ Diagnose pump, seal and compressor failures systematically — from evidence and operating data to a root cause you can act on
⚡ Build a system curve, locate the operating point, and calculate and defend a suction margin
⚡ Select and read any API 682 seal plan and arrangement from service conditions, and recognise it on a P&ID
⚡ Read a compressor performance map and assess whether the machine is adequately protected against surge
⚡ Select pumps without oversizing, apply impeller trim correctly, and understand the cost of operating away from best efficiency point
⚡ Specify mechanical seals — faces, elastomers, arrangements, support fluids and hardware — for difficult service
⚡ Specify and troubleshoot dry gas seals, bearings, lube oil consoles and the auxiliary systems that actually trip machines
⚡ Apply API 610, 682 and 617

Requirements

and identify the datasheet fields that carry the most project risk
⚡ Control installation quality — alignment, grouting, piping strain, nozzle loads and cartridge seal setting
⚡ Plan and witness machinery testing and acceptance, and build a condition monitoring and reliability programme

Requirements

❗ No prior rotating equipment experience is required — every module is built from first principles
❗ Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
❗ Comfortable with basic algebra — every calculation is worked step by step
❗ Helpful but not essential: some familiarity with reading a pump curve or a P&ID
❗ No software or purchases needed — this is an applied machinery course
❗ Modules can be taken in any order — start with the machine in front of you

Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Rotating equipment absorbs a disproportionate share of every maintenance budget on every process plant, and the same failures repeat across the industry year after year. Seals fail and get replaced. Pumps are rebuilt and fail again. A compressor surges and the event gets recorded, investigated and then repeated eighteen months later.
The pattern persists because these machines are treated as three separate specialisms, and because the cause of a failure is usually somewhere other than where the damage appeared. A seal failure is rarely a seal problem. A pump problem is usually a system problem. A surge event is usually a control or process problem that the machine simply reported.
This masterclass covers pumps, mechanical seals and centrifugal compressors as one discipline, because that is how the failures actually connect.
WHAT IS INSIDE
Three complete modules, each a full course in its own right
CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS (API 610) — pump and system curves, the operating point, NPSH available and required, cavitation and suction recirculation, operation away from best efficiency point, API 610 selection and materials, seals, bearings, nozzle loads and installation, commissioning, condition monitoring and systematic troubleshooting.
MECHANICAL SEALS & SEAL SUPPORT SYSTEMS (API 682) — how a seal actually works, faces and materials, categories, types and arrangements, the full piping plan system, seal pots, barrier and buffer fluids, instrumentation, selection from service conditions, installation and setting, and reading a failed seal back to root cause.
CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS (API 617) — compression principles and machine construction, the performance map, surge and stonewall, dry gas seals, bearings and lube oil systems, capacity control and anti-surge, machinery protection, rotordynamics at a practical level, testing and acceptance, and troubleshooting.
WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT
Each module ends in diagnosis, and the diagnosis is where the modules connect. The pump module explains why the seal environment is what it is. The seal module explains what the pump is doing to the seal. The compressor module carries the same logic into turbomachinery — the machine reports a problem that was created somewhere else.
Every failure mode is treated the same way: what the evidence looks like, what data discriminates between causes, and what decision follows — run, repair, modify or replace.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Rotating equipment and machinery engineers; reliability and maintenance engineers running bad actor programmes; process engineers who operate and specify these machines; control engineers working on anti-surge and machinery protection; maintenance technicians and supervisors who overhaul, align and set them; and project engineers buying and witnessing machinery.
WHAT YOU GET
Three full modules across fifteen sections and sixty lessons, approximately twenty hours of structured on-demand video and a final exam, all lecture presentations downloadable, lifetime access on mobile and TV anda certificate of completion.
Further modules are added to this masterclass over time and existing students receive them at no additional cost.
No prior rotating equipment experience is required — every module is built from first principles. Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow it.
Enrol now and start solving these failures instead of repeating them.
