Seal faces and arrangements, every API 682 piping plan, seal pots and barrier fluids, and how to read a failed seal

What you'll learn

⚡ Read and select any API 682 piping plan from service conditions, and recognise it correctly on a P&ID
⚡ Diagnose a failed seal from the evidence on the parts — face wear, heat checking, blistering, elastomer damage and dry running
⚡ Choose between single seals, unpressurised buffer and pressurised barrier arrangements, and justify the choice
⚡ Specify a seal from service conditions — vapour pressure margin, abrasive, polymerising and crystallising duty
⚡ Understand what happens between the seal faces: the fluid film, balance ratio, face pressure and the limits that govern life
⚡ Select face materials and elastomers against process chemistry, temperature and duty
⚡ Apply the API 682 category and type framework, and know when a default selection should be deviated from
⚡ Design and troubleshoot seal support hardware — seal pots, circulation, coolers, cyclones and filters
⚡ Select barrier and buffer fluids on compatibility, viscosity, stability and consumption
⚡ Install and set cartridge seals correctly, and build a seal reliability and emissions improvement programme

Requirements

❗ No prior sealing experience is required — the subject is built up from first principles
❗ Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
❗ Helpful but not essential: some familiarity with centrifugal pumps or reading a P&ID
❗ No mathematics beyond basic algebra — every relationship is explained before it is used
❗ No software or purchases needed — this is an applied equipment and reliability course

Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Seals lead the pump failure statistics, and almost every one of those failures gets recorded as a seal failure. Very few of them are. The seal is where the damage shows up, but the cause is usually in the flush, the support system, the seal chamber conditions or the way the pump is being run.
That distinction is the whole subject, and it is why seal plans exist. A plan is not a piece of piping — it is an engineering decision about how the seal environment will be controlled, made from the service conditions, and it is the decision that determines whether the seal lasts three months or three years.
This course covers the seal, the plans and the diagnosis, in the structure the industry actually uses.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover sealing principles and construction, the API 682 category, type and arrangement framework, the piping plan system in full, seal support hardware and monitoring, and selection through installation to failure analysis.
You will understand what is actually happening between the faces — the fluid film, the balance of closing and opening forces, and the limits that govern it. You will know the difference between a single seal, an unpressurised buffer and a pressurised barrier, and which services each is and is not acceptable for.
EVERY PLAN, EXPLAINED
Three dedicated lessons work through the piping plans: recirculation and flush plans, quench and containment plans including the pressurised barrier systems, and the gas seal plans. For each one — what it does, what it is for, how to recognise it on a P&ID, how to select it from service conditions, and the ways it fails in practice.
THE HARDWARE THAT KILLS SEALS
Seal pots and reservoirs, thermosyphon circulation and its limits, pumping rings, cooling coils and their fouling. Barrier and buffer fluid selection, contamination and consumption. Cyclone separators and their real effectiveness, coolers and filters — and an honest look at the auxiliaries that add failure modes rather than reliability.
READING A FAILED SEAL
Face wear patterns, heat checking, chipping and blistering. Elastomer damage and what caused it. Hardware corrosion and erosion. The evidence of dry running. A diagnostic sequence that works from the failed part back to a root cause you can act on — because until the cause is found, the replacement seal is on the same clock as the last one.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Rotating equipment and machinery engineers; reliability engineers investigating repeat seal failures; maintenance technicians and supervisors fitting and setting cartridge seals; process and project engineers specifying seals and plans on new equipment; and anyone who has to read a seal plan on a P&ID and say whether it is right.
WHAT YOU GET
Structured on-demand video across 20 focused lessons and five sections, a final exam, downloadable lectures, lifetime access on mobile and TV and a certificate of completion.
No prior sealing experience is required — the subject is built from first principles. Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow it.
Enrol now and stop replacing seals that were never going to survive the system they were fitted into.
