Ableton Live Suite is music creation and performance software for composing, arranging, sound design, recording, mixing, and live performance. It combines instruments, effects, sounds, and creative production tools in an environment that supports both traditional linear arrangements and the clip-based workflow of Session View.
Live allows users to move between musical ideas without being restricted to a fixed timeline. Session View provides a flexible space for improvisation and experimentation, while Arrangement View offers a conventional structure for developing music from individual ideas into complete productions.
Software Overview
Live 12 includes a broad collection of MIDI, sound-design, mixing, browsing, and performance features. MIDI Transformations can produce variations from existing clips by adding ornaments and articulations, shaping acceleration and deceleration, connecting notes and chords, and creating guitar-style strumming effects.MIDI Generators can produce melodies, chords, and rhythms according to user-defined constraints. Max for Live also expands MIDI experimentation by allowing users to create Transformations and Generators based on existing tools or custom creations.
MIDI editing has been expanded with tools for arranging notes by pitch, velocity, or duration, as well as stretching, splitting, chopping, joining, velocity shaping, scale-based transposition, and chromatic or in-key interval creation. The Keys and Scales system provides scale highlighting and can use clip scales when transforming or generating musical ideas. Scale information can also synchronize with compatible MIDI devices and instruments, with changes reflected between Live and Push.
Live provides additional sound-design options through Meld, Granulator III, and Roar. Meld is a bi-timbral, MPE-capable instrument with two macro oscillators, while Granulator III provides granular processing with MPE support and real-time audio capture. Roar provides three saturation stages that can operate in series, parallel, mid/side, or multiband configurations, together with a feedback generator and modulation matrix.
The software also introduces expanded probability controls and support for working with tuning systems outside 12-tone equal temperament. Modulation behavior allows users to continue adjusting a parameter after assigning an LFO or other modulation source, providing direct control while modulation remains active.

Why Choose Ableton Live Suite
Ableton Live Suite is designed for musicians, producers, sound designers, and performers who want to develop musical ideas, arrange complete productions, and perform within the same environment. The combination of Session View and Arrangement View supports both spontaneous experimentation and structured composition. Its MIDI generation and transformation tools provide additional ways to develop musical material, while the included instruments, effects, modulation features, and browser tools support detailed sound design and production workflows. The software also provides accessibility and interface customization options for different working preferences.
What's New
MIDI TransformationsMIDI clips can be varied with ornaments, articulations, acceleration and deceleration curves, connected notes and chords, and guitar-style strumming.
MIDI Generators
Generators create melodies, chords, and rhythms using custom constraints, allowing generated patterns to become starting points for musical ideas.
Max for Live MIDI Tools
Max for Live supports the creation of MIDI Transformations and Generators based on existing tools or custom designs.
MIDI Editing Improvements
Notes can be reordered by pitch, velocity, or duration and manipulated through stretching, splitting, chopping, joining, velocity shaping, transposition, and interval creation.
Keys and Scales
Clips can be assigned scales for scale highlighting, MIDI transformation, idea generation, and synchronization with MIDI devices and instruments. Changes made in Live are reflected in Push, and vice versa.
Expanded Probability
Probability rules can be applied to groups of notes, while chords can be configured to trigger one randomly selected note when the probability condition occurs.
Tunings
Live supports workflows using tuning systems outside 12-tone equal temperament, including tuning access through Live devices and MPE-capable plugins.
Meld
Meld provides two macro oscillators in a bi-timbral, MPE-capable instrument designed for textural and experimental sound shaping.
Granulator III
Granulator III adds MPE control for note bend, vibrato, and glissando and supports real-time audio capture for immediate manipulation.
Roar
Roar provides three saturation stages that can be arranged in series, parallel, mid/side, or multiband configurations. It also includes a feedback generator and modulation matrix.
New Modulation Behavior
Modulated parameters remain directly adjustable after an LFO or other modulation source has been assigned, allowing continuous parameter control alongside modulation.
New Packs
Lost and Found includes sounds created from unusual materials, percussive objects, foley recordings, and expressive objects, along with instruments, Drum Racks, and sound effects.
Performance Pack includes devices from Iftah for performance workflows, including set snapshots, layered macros and curves, looping in Arrangement View, and pre-arranged performance structures.
Stacked Detail Views
Devices and the Clip Editor, or automation and device parameters, can be displayed together to reduce the need to switch between views.
View Styling
Live 12 introduces a cleaner and more minimal interface designed to reduce visual complexity.
Mixer in Arrangement
The Mixer can be used in Arrangement View and toggled through the Mixer View Control or View menu.
Mixer Improvements
The Mixer includes visual changes intended to make detailed mixing decisions easier to read and control.
Browser Tagging and Filtered Searches
Browser searches can locate sounds across the Ableton library beyond its standard categorization. Sounds use tags, and users can add their own labels and custom categories.
Sound Similarity Search
A sample can be used to find comparable sounds and instrument presets through a neural network. Drum Rack samples can also be replaced with similar sounds.
Browser History
The Browser records previous searches so users can revisit sounds and categories they have previously explored.
Accessibility and Navigation Improvements
Core workflows can be controlled with assistive technologies such as screen readers, with additional keyboard shortcuts for navigating Live.
New Themes
Additional themes provide cool, neutral, warm, and high-contrast appearance options.
