Artificial insemination is recognized as the reproductive technology that had the most impact on animal reproduction. As this field of research grew, scientists felt the importance of organizing in international societies dedicated to this area. One of the oldest of these societies is the Society for the Study of Reproduction. In the veterinary field, reproductive physiology and pathology became known as "Theriogenology". The body of knowledge in animal reproduction has seen an exponential growth in the last 50 years. In recent years, the field of study expanded beyond laboratory species and production animals to include wildlife conservation and management.
The book outlines recent research and their application to the health and welfare of animals. It covers different aspects of reproduction in domestic and wild animals, including the assisted reproductive techniques, which have enormously enhanced the ability to rescue endangered species and provide a strong support to the high reproductive efficiency requested by livestock production. As methods for the study of reproduction have increased in sophistication, a huge amount of information has been generated. This creates a challenge for the scientific community and the practitioner as it becomes very difficult to translate some of the discoveries into application to medicine. With evolving technology and a continual increase in knowledge, regarding domestic pets or agricultural animals, new information is available on diverse topics in this broad field. The book contains latest research and developments covering all areas of animal reproduction, including studies on male and female reproductive physiology, sexual differentiation, endocrinology, gamete physiology and preservation, in vitro fertilization, hormonal manipulation of reproduction, pregnancy physiology, reproductive pathology, and diagnosis and treatment of reproductive disorders. Containing contributions from experts in the field, the information in this book will be of interest to both students and practitioners.
