The world currently confronts a multitude of complex challenges that necessitate a sustainable design strategy. Considering issues such as greed, corruption, conflict, and rapid technological change, it is crucial to prioritize innovation in design that is driven by purpose for the advancement of humanity. We must chart a course toward a brighter future-one that protects our planet for generations to come. Imagining a sustainable, thriving, and meaningful future is essential, especially during these challenging times. This book seeks to provide guidance in realizing this vision and fostering significant impact.
Design involves creating meaningful and sustainable experiences that serve both individuals and the environment, going beyond simple aesthetics and functionality. To make real progress, we must nurture a design culture that is centered on purpose, encouraging us to move past conventional design principles. This necessary shift highlights the limitations of traditional design thinking, indicating that its time has passed.
Therefore, it is vital to evolve beyond conventional design thinking. The design industry needs a transformative approach that goes beyond the traditional framework of design thinking. This new methodology should promote a sustainable, purpose-driven design culture rather than relying on superficial and ad-hoc design processes characterized by informal discussions and whimsical design tools.
The design methodologies currently utilized around the world are facing significant scrutiny due to their shortcomings. They often lack vital elements that are crucial for ensuring safety, accountability, transparency, integrity, and empathy. Examples of ineffective design are evident in the $3 billion setback of Elon Musk's Mars rocket, the incidents involving the Boeing 737 Max, the unfortunate Titan submersible tragedy, Citibank's $500 million loss stemming from a flawed loan management system, and the $2 trillion F-35 program. These failures can be largely traced back to a lack of critical thinking, personal integrity, empathy, resilience, and creativity among designers, as well as the absence of a robust design framework, sustainable design tools, and insufficient engagement from the design community.
This book explores a new design methodology that transcends traditional design practices and adopts a purpose-driven perspective. The main goal is to foster a sustainable design culture that emphasizes the well-being of both individuals and the environment. Ethical principles will guide this innovative approach, considering long-term effects and striving to generate a positive impact.
