This front stretched the entire length of the border between Italy and Austria, which is over 600 kilometers (nearly 400 miles) long, starting at the Swiss border and ending in the Adriatic Sea. There was snowfall throughout the entire year on the high Alpine sectors, where the armies lived and fought. Like the situation on the other fronts, a narrow neutral zone separated the opposing troops. An Italian soldier was looking at a field cap that was floating above the enemy trench as he reflected on the circumstances that led to the carnage and said to himself, "we put each other to death in such a callous manner because we believe that anything that is outside the realm of our own lives does not exist... If I knew anything about that poor boy if I could ever hear him speak, or if I could read the letters he carries in his breast, then and only then would it seem wrong to kill him in such a manner."
