Sumer, sometimes known as the "country of the kings," was created between 4500 and 4000 BCE in southern Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). It became one of history's first civilizations, with its people draining the marshes for cultivation, developing trade, and establishing industries including weaving, smelting, and ceramics.
Each city was guarded by a different deity or deities, with enormous shrines built inside the city centre to house them. The Gods of Mesopotamia retained vestiges of their ancient elemental responsibilities, such as air, fire, and thunder.
The gods of Mesopotamia were not homogeneous in terms of name, power, derivation, or position in the hierarchy. Because Mesopotamian culture differed from place to region, Marduk must not be viewed as Gods in the same manner, Zeus ruled in Greece. While Marduk was greatly revered in Babylon, Enlil held office in Sumer.
