During the illness of Constantine I, peace with the Sasanian Empire of Shapur II was definitively broken, after 40 years of fulfillment of the treaty between the two powers. According to Roman sources the culprit was the Persian, who attacked Singara, Nusaybin and Amide (Diarbekir) in Mesopotamia, somewhat unsuccessfully because the invader could not permanently occupy what was conquered. The first-born Constantine II would rule in Britannia, Gaul and Hispania and was recognized as the main Augustus; Constant assumed command over Illyria, Italy and Africa and the youngest, Constantius II, obtained the government in the East, but does not feel very secure in his throne and unleashes a massacre of relatives in Constantinople from which only two cousins, Gallus and Julian, escape because they are children.
