"Post-war Japan became rich", this sentence is often mentioned in contemporary times. However, what period does the so-called "post-war" refer to?
First of all, it took ten years for Japan after the defeat to restore the per capita GDP, which had fallen sharply during the war, to its pre-war level in 1955. If 1954 and the period before it were defined as "post-war", I would have to admit that "post-war Japan was poor." Secondly, the "five-five-year system that laid the political foundation for post-war Japan" is often talked about. Obviously, the "five-five-year system" was established in 1955, so the "post-war" naturally did not include the period of 1954 and before. In the Japanese economic white paper in 1956, there was a content that became a buzzword at the time, "Now it is no longer a post-war". In other words, it was a common understanding at the time to regard 1955 as the end of the "post-war". At the same time that this "post-war" ended, another "post-war" symbolized by the "five-five-year system" and "high-speed economic growth" began.
If these two "post-wars" are called "first post-war" and "second post-war" for the time being, then the "post-war" in "post-war Japan has become richer" obviously refers to the latter. There are many differences between "Post- First War" and "Post-Second War" in many respects. As will be discussed in Chapter 7 of this book, the average personal income in Japan in 1948 was less than US$100, compared to US$1,269 in the United States and US$91 in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the view that Japan should be classified as a "backward country" in Asia became mainstream at that time.
A hypothesis can be put forward here, that is, from "after the first war" to "after the second war," the discussion about Japanese national identity has undergone a certain qualitative change.
