The manuscript itself barely survived. Found in a Yaroslavl monastery in 1795 by collector Aleksei Musin-Pushkin, the original burned during Napoleon's 1812 occupation of Moscow. Only copies made before the fire preserved the text, leading to persistent debates about its authenticity and origins.
This edition focuses on what other translations overlook: the poem's deep connections to pre-Christian Slavic religion. Perun Mountain's translation from the 1800s Old Russian text includes extensive commentary revealing how pagan beliefs persisted beneath the Christian surface of Kievan Rus' culture.
